The History of Cultured Pearls
On 11
July 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto became
the first person in the world to successfully culture a pearl, through
his extensive study of how pearls are formed within oysters,
he discovered that an oyster will cover any foreign object
in its shell with nacre, the luminescent substance that forms
a pearl. Mikimoto continued to
experiment with different techniques to artificially implant a
foreign object in oysters to stimulate the creation of pearls.

Although
Mikimoto's first cultured pearl
was semi-spherical rather than perfectly round, the process set
a precedent and Mikimoto was granted a patent by the Japanese
government in 1896. After improving his cultivating and harvesting
techniques, Mr Mikimoto was able
to ship his products overseas, making cultured pearls one of the
first successful export products for Japan.
