RJC Certification
In August 2023, Mikimoto obtained Code of Practice (COP) certification from the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). The RJC is an international non-profit organization in the jewellery and watch industry that was established in 2005. It has more than 1,500 member companies that span the entire supply chain, from mining suppliers to retail jewellers. In order to realize responsible trading in all processes, the RJC has established and promotes compliance with ethical, human rights, and environment-friendly standards.
Our responsible sourcing policy
At Mikimoto, we adhere to transparent and ethical business practices, with a strong commitment to respecting human rights and labour rights as well as minimizing environmental impact. And importantly, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ethical sourcing throughout our global supply chains.
Mikimoto guarantees that all our diamonds are conflict-free. Conflict diamonds are mined in war zones in African countries and sold to fund military action against governments. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established in 2003 to put an end to the conflict diamond trade, and now you need a certificate issued by the country of origin to export or import rough diamonds. All participating countries must adhere to the System of Warranties that requires suppliers to provide warranty statements on all sales and purchase invoices for diamonds. We adhere rigorously to both the Kimberley Process and the World Diamond Council's voluntary System of Warranties.
The same goes for our gold. All the gold we use is from refiners accredited by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) to avoid contributing to conflict and human rights abuses. The LBMA is a London-based international trade association representing the global wholesale gold and silver market and responsible for maintaining benchmarks for all precious metals. It also accredits auditors and assurance providers to enable them to conduct Responsible Gold Audits. By trading with the most trusted and reliable suppliers, we ensure the quality and integrity of our gold.
Human Rights Policy
To respect the human rights of all people involved in our business and supply chain, we have established the Mikimoto Human Rights Policy and promise to fulfil our responsibilities as a company.
Human Rights Policy of K. Mikimoto & Co., Ltd.
K. Mikimoto & Co., Ltd. (“Mikimoto” or “we”) adopted the “Corporate Guidelines” under the spirit of “As a global luxury jeweller Mikimoto is dedicated to creating a sense of beauty and elegance in the lives of people throughout the world.” as prescribed in its “Corporate Philosophy” and has been conducting its operations with a goal to create society and environment where the people throughout the world can live with enriched heart. To achieve this goal, we hereby prescribe the “Human Rights Policy of K. Mikimoto & Co., Ltd.” and will fulfil such responsibilities in order to respect the human rights of all people involved in its operation and supply chains.
[Scope of application]
This policy applies to every executive and employee. We will also continuously ask suppliers and other business partners to understand and cooperate with this policy.
[Responsibility to respect human rights]
Mikimoto will take utmost care not to violate human rights of anyone involved in our operations, being aware of the fact that possibility of any adverse human rights impacts in the course of our operations cannot be completely eliminated. We will also develop supply chains, which will fulfil the responsibility of respecting human rights, by taking appropriate rectification measures whenever any adverse human rights impacts occur.
[Compliance with codes/laws and regulations]
Mikimoto will support and respect international codes on human rights such as “Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Implementing the United Nations ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy’ Framework” and “ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.” We will also comply with laws, regulations and rules of countries and regions where we conduct our operations, and if there is any discrepancy between such compliance and internationally recognized human rights, we will pursue ways which will respect the international human rights principles.
[Human rights due diligence]
Mikimoto will identify any adverse human rights impacts, which we made to society, and endeavor to prevent and mitigate such impacts by developing a mechanism for human rights due diligence and continuously implementing such due diligence.
[Remedy]
If it becomes clear that any of Mikimoto’s operations directly caused or was indirectly involved in any adverse human rights impacts, Mikimoto will undertake to rectify or remedy it through appropriate means.
[Training]
Mikimoto will incorporate this policy into its relevant internal procedures, etc. and provide appropriate trainings to its executives, employees and persons concerned, so that this policy will infiltrate/be embedded into its operations.
[Information Disclosure]
Mikimoto will disclose as appropriate the progress of its undertakings to respect human rights through various reports and websites.
